The City of Dreams
Ancient yet modern, Mumbai is India in microcosm. Earlier it was a cluster
of seven islands and was the dowry of Portuguese Princess Catherine of
Braganza who married Charles II of England in 1661. The Portuguese named
it as 'Bom Baia' which means 'Good Bay'
. The Kolis, one of the earliest
inhabitants, used to call the islands as 'Mumbai' after Mumbadevi, the
Hindu deity.
Nearly twenty million people live here who come from diverse ethnic
backgrounds and speak over a dozen languages adding color, flavor, and
texture to the great Mumbai melting pot. Mumbai is the financial,
commercial, and entertainment capital of India.
Today, this sprawling metropolis continues to attract millions of dreamers
and professionals from all corners of the country. Just as it did centuries
ago when it transformed from a collection of quiet fishing villages into a
bustling colonial port, the city thrives on its relentless energy, unmatched
resilience, and deep-rooted history.
The glorious city offers a host of historical and modern landmarks to
explore like Gateway of India, Elephanta Caves, Sanjay Gandhi National
Park, Religious temples, Planetarium, Queens Necklace to name a few. The
climate during this time of the year is pleasant, the temperature ranging
from 20°C to 29°C.
